The Highland Rim Bicycle Club’s membership drive for 2016 is in full swing. On a recent club ride long-time club member, Rick Orzino, recommended we let potential club members know about the club’s community involvement. He started listing projects and once again a club member’s great idea takes flight; becoming the topic of our monthly newsletter sent to current club members and the website homepage.
HRBike members ride bikes A LOT but we are also very involved in the community. We educate people of all ages about cycling; teaching bike safety, maintenance, health, and advocacy. And, in addition to riding the roads, we also help keep them clean.
Here is how HRBike members help out in local schools: Joe Capezza and club members repaired bikes & encouraged kids at a bike rodeo at New Union Elementary School (photo above). Jessie Schwer coordinated Re-cycle Tullahoma at local middle schools, where we helped students build a “new” bike from used ones. Tim & Julia Harrison and volunteers helped the American Heritage Girls with cycling badges. We worked with Tullahoma’s Sunrise Rotary and Woody’s Bicycles to award a bike & helmet to several deserving students at East Lincoln Elementary School; Tim Harrison gave bike safety tips to all the students at these events. And, for many years, proceeds from our annual group ride the Elk River Valley 100, were presented to Motlow Community College for use as a scholarships.
Also, HRBike members “Keep Tullahoma Clean” by periodically picking up roadside trash on Hwy 130; Hunter Norris will be coordinating this community project for 2016. Thanks Keena Cornelius for heading up the project for the past several years.
