Sequatchie Valley Century, PB & J Rider

What a ride Saturday! You guys are definitely a force to be reckoned with and so was the weather!

When we first arrived, I was wondering how I was going to manage with a persistent chest cold among 4 very strong riders, ready to hammer. As I did my small (about 1 minute max) warm-up lap, which was really a cool-down lap, I realized I either had to lather in the embrocation cream, or freeze. However, Mike graciously loaned me his vest, which was a life-saver.

After that small obstacle was resolved, it soon changed to “man down” at the starting line, which caused an immediate separation from you men and myself. I had fleeting thoughts of either riding for miles upon miles to catch back up, or going semi-solo for the entire race, but thankfully there were enough turns at the beginning to keep the pack at a slow pace which afforded me an opportunity to catch back up.

After ten, lung burning, leg thrashing miles, I was wondering what I got myself into, but thankfully it seemed that the pain and anguish was at least verbally shared amongst us, although I am unsure if BOB THE IMPALER was ever suffering.

The next 30+ miles were actually fun and seemed to go by in a flash. I believe in part due to the Krystal riders and Chattanooga bike club riders. Not sure what exactly did it, but I definitely got into the race mode for a few miles, which I paid for dearly later into the ride, although it was still worth it!!

Hated that Mike had to leave us at the split, but I have suffered plenty with cramps and I have to say, ever since Ludwig recommended the Infinite sports drink, I have been “crampy” but not suffered actual cramps (amazing that Ludwig could actually suggest something that was good instead of the lewd, gaudy, or reprobate suggestions he is infamous for, lol)! So, I can definitely relate to Mike’s sage decision.

After Mike made his split, it was my turn in the hurt locker. The real struggle for me arrived around mile 70, and by that time, I knew that I was losing energy fast and my legs were getting very tired. The battle with my chest cold for the last two weeks left me depleted of energy.

At the 75 mile refuel station, which was indeed a mercy stop for me, I inhaled the best peanut butter and banana sandwich ever made, although I struggled with the idea of being labeled as a “peanut butter and jelly sandwich” rider as Geody refers to our cycling neighbors!

For the next few miles, I pushed through the pain and held the tempo the best I could manage, until around mile 95, which I slowly lost ground again. Then, when I got on the highway and flats, I was able to get back up to around 27mph solo until I over shifted and dropped my chain in front of Wal-mart. Thankfully, I only had 2 miles left and arrived sore, tired, coughing, yet elated!

Overall, a great ride and I definitely will do it again!
